Everything there is to know about composite wood

What is composite wood?

Discovered in Japan 30 years ago, composite wood is now all the rage in France, which is not at all surprising. Made from wood and thermoplastic polymer, it combines various qualities which have forged its reputation with consumers. Aesthetically pleasing, practical, resistant, recyclable…composite wood has endless assets!

Composite wood: so robust!

Composite wood is synonymous with sturdiness: it resists bad weather and chlorine without any particular treatment! Composite wood is therefore well suited to the garden environment, in all forms (swimming pool coping, furniture, decking, outdoor furnishings) provided that they are not structural. Its longevity is also much appreciated: its composition, based on polymer resin makes it resistant not only to insects, but also to cracks and rot.

An innovative and aesthetically-pleasing composition

With composite wood, there are no more splinters! Its composition guarantees a smooth, pleasant feel. When it is high-quality, composite wood is anti-skid, making it an ideal material for the edge of swimming pools. Composite wood should have a mat, consistent aspect, without knots or imperfections. It is available in different colours, which last over time.

Practical…yes, but what about the price?

Composite wood requires very little maintenance: no sanding, oil or paint. It is easy and cheap to clean, requiring just water, detergent and a high-pressure cleaner. By combining longevity, sturdiness and minimum upkeep, composite wood has become an easy-to-lay material, an alternative, or complementary to traditional wood. The cost of top-of-the-range composite wood decking is close to that of Ipe decking.

Composite wood or traditional wood?

How do I choose my wood? You should choose a wood which is best-suited to your needs.

If you own a swimming pool, or if you live in a damp climate, then composite wood is perfect for you, as are exotic woods. If you defend ecological values, you will prefer composite wood.

You are always busy and have little time to spend on maintaining your wood, then composite wood is the one for you.

If, however, you find that imperfections add to the charm of the wood, if you like the warmth of natural dark colours, then have a look at more traditional materials.

Our advice: the success met by composite wood has also brought about mass production…with a vast difference in prices for sometimes mediocre quality. It is its rigorous manufacturing and the choice of its components that guarantee composite wood its resistant properties. Choosing a composite wood from Cerland is a guarantee of a quality wood.
